The appellation “best” is, of course, an absurdity. So too is limiting a decade’s experiences to ten exemplars. Herewith are simply a few of many works from the past ten years that stirred me deeply, provoked useful thought, and that have continued to resonate.
(In order of release)
1. Five Broken Cameras (Emad Burnat, Guy Davidi, 2011)
2. The Woman Who Left (Lav Diaz, 2016)
3. Martírio (Tatiana Almeida, Ernesto de Carvalho, Vincent Carelli, 2016)
4. The Taste of Cement (Ziad Kalthoum, 2017)
5. By the Time It Gets Dark (Anocha Suwichakornpong, 2017)
6. Women with Gunpowder Earrings (Reza Farahmand, 2018)
7. Leave No Trace (Debra Granik, 2018)
8. The Cordillera of Dreams (Patricio Guzmán, 2019)
9. The Social Dilemma (Jeff Orlowski, 2020)
10. France Against the Robots (Jean-Marie Straub, 2020)
Honorable mention (being on the cusp of the past 10 years): Slave Ship (T.Marie, 2010)
